There are many types of Il Capitano: they can be comically cowardly, buffoonishly brave, or something in between. One thing that’s certain is that they BELIEVE they’re strong, handsome, and a heck of a great guy. The whole world is Il Capitano’s audience, and they always put on a show.![]()

The Arlecchino, or Harlequin, is actually a specific subset of the “zanni,” which are the comic servant characters. They function as a servant, usually to Pantalone, but also frequently Il Capitano or Il Dottore. Their characteristic prop was the “batocchio,” which was a stick consisting of two strips of wood that could clap together to make noise, which was also used to drive cattle, and is original “slapstick.”![]()
