The Arlecchino, or Harlequin, is actually a specific subset of the “zanni,” which are the comic servant characters. They function as a servant, usually to Pantalone, but also frequently Il Capitano or Il Dottore. Their characteristic prop was the “batocchio,” which was a stick consisting of two strips of wood that could clap together to make noise, which was also used to drive cattle, and is original “slapstick.”Interested in learning about or performing Commedia Dell’Arte, the classic improvised comedic theater form?
